11

--November 11--
It is crucial to actively foster and develop new people and to allow them to play a full and active role. Seniors must not hold back their juniors.

10

--November 10--
A struggle is not won by theory or calculation. The factors that determine the outcome are energy, perseverance, capable people, and single-minded action.

9

--November 9--
A person of conviction who leads an upstanding life and demonstrates shining victory in society is a true winner. More precisely put, a person who has faith is the ultimate victor. Buddhism exists to enable us to lead such a life. There is something that I want to clarify for the sake of the future.

8

--November 8--
Advancing kosen-rufu comes down to propagating the teaching. Through such efforts we are laying the foundation for an age of the people. Those who can actually expand kosen-rufu are genuine leaders. Those who cannot, lack courage and are self-centered.

7

--November 7--
Happiness is not something bestowed on us by others or that comes from somewhere outside us. It is something that we ourselves must gain, with our own hearts. As Nichiren Daishonin says, “It is the heart that is important.” (WND, p1000)

6

--November 6--
What is the secret to helping young people develop their potential? It is important not to take them to task unreasonably. There are also times when praise alone will not adequately move people’s heart. While on occasion it is important that we give our juniors specific advice and direction, it is even more important that we work with them and together take action for kosen-rufu.

5

--November 5--
The benefit of the Mystic Law is inconspicuous. Even if we cannot see the results of our efforts right away, everything is constantly moving in the very best direction for our lives. That itself is the most profound benefit.

4

--November 4--
Buddhism is concerned with the present and the future. Instead of looking back at the past, we should always live our lives gazing from the present towards the future. No matter what great things we may have achieved in the past, we must not allow ourselves, now or in the future, to criticism and complaint, to stray from the correct path, and cause trouble to our fellow members and the SGI as a whole. For if we do so, we will become losers.

3

--November 3--
A person may have all the wealth and treasure in the world, but viewed from the perspective of the ultimate reality of life, such things are but mere illusions. WE cannot carry them with us into the next existence. The most important thing is to build an indestructible “place of happiness” within our own life. That is the purpose of Buddhism and of Buddhist practice.

2

--November 2--
In life, there is nothing more precious, correct, and important than faith. For that very reason, please do not forget that it is an act of the deepest parental love and affection to, above all, encourage your children to live in the “garden of the SGI”.

1

--November 1--
If we are going to live this life, we must not waste it on trivial, self-centered pursuits, but instead live for a lofty ideal. And the most lofty ideal is worldwide kosen-rufu. Those who continue to uphold a great philosophy, a great ideal, and a great religion are unsurpassed victors as human beings.

31

--October 31--
In Nichiren Daishonin’s writings, we find the statement: “Fortune comes from one’s heart and makes one worthy of respect.” Faith is what enables us to strengthen and deepen our hearts to the ultimate degree.

30

--October 30--
To continue advancing on the path of mentor and disciple for the next 10, 20, 30 years, even if no one is watching our efforts – that is the spirit of a genuine practitioner of Buddhism.

29

--October 29--
The path of kosen-rufu is the path walked by Nichiren Daishonin. It is the supreme path of happiness. Let us cheerfully and wisely advance in harmony along this path as we steadily expand the scope of our kosen-rufu movement.

28

--October 28--
Sometimes people who have lost their passion for kosen-rufu renew their commitment of their own accord, jolted by experiencing a deadlock in their lives. Though it may take time, the sincerity behind the leaders’ daimoku and encouragement will get through to the person eventually and he or she will definitely stand up again. This is the essence of faith.

27

--October 27--
There is no more worthy cause than taking action for kosen-rufu. No one can surpass a person tenaciously carrying out activities for kosen-rufu. Absolutely nothing can defeat a noble champion of the spirit. Please be confident of this.

26

--October 26--
President Toda said: “The ultimate fruit of our efforts will begin to appear from our 50s. No matter what your circumstances right now, live with joy and perseverance!” And specifically in his guidance to women, he said: “True happiness will begin to blossom in your lives from your 40s onward.” Therefore, regardless of how painful or trying your present situation, you must not be defeated. It is important to undergo many hardships during one’s youth.

25

--October 25--
Gandhi said: “Untruth corrodes the soul; truth nourishes it.” Deceit corrupts the spirit and fosters human misery. Truth enriches our spirit and fosters human happiness. That is why it is so important to thoroughly expose falsehoods and work to spread the truth.

24

--October 24--
Mr Toda once firmly instructed the Youth Division: “If the members all support the third president, kosen-rufu will surely be achieved.” If the SGI remains based on the spirit of mentor and disciple that was shared by its first, second, and third presidents, its future triumph is assured. This is the sole source for the everlasting growth and development of our organization. I would like to make this point absolutely clear for the sake of the future.

23

--October 23--
Putting the finishing touches on our lives is very important. When a plane lands, it gradually reduces altitude, but as we enter the final chapter of our lives, we should try to keep flying at the same high “spiritual altitude”, we should keep moving forward without reducing our “spiritual speed” – right up until our final moments.

22

--October 22--
I hope that as leaders you will show great sensitivity for people’s individual situations. At the same time, I want to remind you that no matter how adverse our individual predicament, we need to live out our lives based on steadfast faith. Only then can we accumulate all kinds of treasures in life as true benefit.

21

--October 21--
All sorts of things happen on the road to achieving kosen-rufu. Fellow members may pass away, having fulfilled their mission in this lifetime. It is only natural for us, as human beings, to be saddened by this. However, we must not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by our emotions that we become weak. The important thing is to continue moving forward with the determination: “Whatever happens, I will keep going! I will challenge myself! And I will win!”

20

--October 20--
Life is a struggle. Buddhism is a struggle. Only by surmounting great suffering can we appreciate life’s depth and joy. That is why we must continue to move forward. We must take action. This is what the philosophers of the world teach.

19

--October 19--
What kind of person demonstrates true human greatness and nobility? It is someone who, no matter what happens, works single-mindedly for kosen-rufu without wavering in the least, and without moaning or complaining. This is what the Gosho teaches. It is also the way of life expounded in the Lotus Sutra.

18

--October18--
Our organization of faith, the SGI, serves as a bulwark against evil and negative influences. Practising together in an organization enables us to advance unswervingly on the correct path towards a firm and certain goal and to achieve personal development and growth through supporting, encouraging, and inspiring each other. This is why having an organization is so important. It is also the reason why organizations exist in all societies and in all areas of human endeavour.

17

--October 17--
The Mystic Law enables us to change poison into medicine. Through its power, a change person can turn poverty into affluence and illness into strong health. Anyone can bring his or her life to shine in brilliant splendor. In this process, we are able to carry out our human revolution and ultimately realize a safe and peaceful society.

16

--October 16--
Let us also resolutely encourage, train, and wholeheartedly foster the Youth Division and Future Division members, who are our successors. Let us together pledge to solidly construct new strongholds of capable people dedicated to kosen-rufu in each region, always maintaining a spirit of mutual respect and advancing together in harmonious unity.

15

--October 15--
The new century is one in which the wisdom of women will truly shine. It is the century in which women will stand up to play an increasingly active role. And those organizations, companies, and nations where women are able to speak out feely on any subject and dynamically actualize their potential will experience growth and prosperity.

14

--October 14--
If, in our earnest endeavour to promote this great people’s movement for kosen-rufu, you behave as if everything is a joke or strut about with self-centered arrogance, you will destroy the noble realm of Buddhism. If you forget the demanding practice of faith and just seek to enjoy an easy indolent life, hellish suffering is bound to await you down the line, Nichiren Daishonin sternly warns us of this in his writing.

13

--October 13--
Buddhism teaches the oneness of birth and death. It is important that we bring our lives to a magnificent close, just like the setting sun paints the sky in majestic crimson hues.

12

--October 12--
Nichiren Daishonin wished for happiness and peace for all people of the ten thousand years and more of the Latter Day. He envisioned the widespread propagation of the Mystic Law throughout the entire world. This Buddhism transcends the narrow confines of a single sect or school and is open to all humanity; it is a human religion, a universal religion.

11

--October 11--
As youth, it is important that you devote yourselves earnestly and sincerely to kosen-rufu, whether others are watching your efforts or not. Please cast aside airs and pretension, putting on airs is pathetic playacting. With pretense, you cannot help others. You cannot even make yourself happy. Nichiren Daishonin writes, “Relay on the Law and not on persons.”(WND, p872) The important thing is that we devote our lives to the Mystic Law.

10

--October 10--
There are members and friends who are suffering. We need to reach out to them with words of support and encouragement. It is important to respond immediately to the issues before us. Remaining silent is foolish, lacking in compassion, and leads to defeat.

9

--October 9--
“One’s voice does he Buddha’s work”(Gosho Zenshu, p 708). Our voice can serve as a jeweled sword for cutting down evil and corruption, or it can express warm, heartfelt encouragement. The voice that does the Buddha’s work is not merely our physical voice, either; it is also the words we write in proclaiming the truth.

8

--October 8--
The truly great do not seek greatness for themselves; they seek to enable others to realize greatness. It is the responsibility of seniors to protect and work for the welfare of their juniors, and to foster them into people even more capable than themselves.

7

--October 7--
It is not up to others; it all comes down to us. Our inner resolve and our actions have an influence more powerful than a book of million words. Through taking action we will also feel a sense of purpose and savour joy and good fortune.

6

--October 6--
Nichiren Daishonin said: “The realm of the environment also arises from this single law of life.” (Gosho Zenshu,p 563). As the principle of “three thousand realms in a single life-moment” (ichinen sanzen) teaches, the power to transform society lies in the fundamental attitude or inner resolve of human beings.

5

--October 5--
Young people should not be too easy on themselves, because that is the path to ruin. Cast aside your dependency! There is no way but to stand up in faith through your own efforts. With your sincere and persistent prayers, please touch the lives of all around you – friends and opponents alike – and create a grand alliance of the people and a powerful new ground swell for kosen-rufu.

4

--October 4--
A famous saying by the Russian writer Leo Tolstroy (1828 – 1910) is: “Suffering is the necessary condition for spiritual and physical growth.” Experiencing various trials and problems leads to personal growth and to the polishing of our character. In particular, all of our challenges are exertions in working to realize kosen-rufu make our lives sparkle like gemstones. This is a principle of Buddhism.

3

--October 3--
Founding President Makiguchi once said: “We are trying to faithfully carry out Nichiren Daishonin’s decree, so that we could possibly be holding you back? Buddhism is not an intellectual game. Its purpose is to liberate the land and the people from suffering, to stand by with folded arms and fail to do so when the time arises is to betray the Buddha’s Intent.”

2

--October 2--
The SGI seeks to enable all people to realize genuine, indestructible happiness, not only those who are obviously suffering, but also those who are leading what appear to be happy and enjoyable lives. That is because, no matter how happy a person may think they are, there is no happiness greater than practicing Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. As the Daishonin says, “There is no true happiness for human beings other than chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.”(WND,p 681)

1

--October 1--
Raising capable people is not something achieved through intellectualizing or daydreaming. Second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda, too always made a concerted effort to meet people. The Soka spirit is found nowhere but in our efforts to meet with sincerely encourage each person and to advance together with them towards kosen-rufu.

30

--September 30-- Each day, let us cheerfully meet with and encourage our fellow members, who are working so hard for kosen-rufu. Let us foster capable successors who will carry on our struggle. And let us vigorously enact a drama of continuous expansion.

29

--September 29--
Some people struggle in earnest. Some are defeated by struggle. And some give up without even trying. Only those who struggle until the very end can attain Buddhahood. Such people are life’s true winners.

28

--September 28-- What is the correct practice for us as practitioners of Nichiren Buddhism in modern times? It is propagating the Mystic Law. Nichiren Daishonin repeatedly emphasized that wide propagation of Nichiren Buddhism is the practice suited to the Latter Day of the Law.

27

--September 27-- The great champion of the American Civil Rights Movement, Dr Martin Luther King Jr, declared: “Religion endows us with the conviction that we are not alone in this vast, uncertain universe.” True religion teaches the basic principles of the universe; it teaches the eternity of life and a firm purpose for living. If we understand the true essence of life, we will never suffer from a sense of being all alone in this universe.

26

--September 26-- No matter how many fine words we may string together, they alone cannot produce unity or lead to victory. Unity comes from hearts joined together. The spirit of “many in body, one in mind” forms the basis for true unity.

25

--September 25-- Hard work is a priceless treasure for young people. Instead of putting on a performance to try to win popularity, please strive with all your might to protect your fellow members, and open the way for the triumph of kosen-rufu. Only through such genuine hard work will you earn the trust and confidence of the members of the Women and Men Divisions.

24

--September 24-- The 21st century is the century of the Youth Division. The full-fledged ascent of the lofty summit of kosen-rufu lies before you. There is no grander stage on which to live out your youth than that of the SGI. There is no stage of endeavour more wonderful – both from the perspective of its underpinning philosophy and its international scope. If you do not leave behind a great history now, when will you?

23

--September 23-- Small incremental efforts can lead to great victory in life. The same principle applies to our struggle for kosen-rufu. One-to-one dialogue sets the giant wheel of history in motion.

22

--September 22--
Nichiren Daishonin writes: “Life is limited; we must not begrudge it. What we should ultimately aspire to is the Buddha land.” (WND, p214) There is no retirement age in Buddhism. And there is no retirement from life. We must continue working all our lives, to our hearts’ content, for the sake of people’s happiness and for the sake of the Law. If we take ourselves away from the organization’s activities, our lives will only be empty and lonely. We must proceed to the end on the path of kosen-rufu that we have chosen to walk in this lifetime.

21

--September 21-- I have actualized, down to the letter, the vision cherished by my mentor for creation of a great path of education, peace, and culture. The entire heart and essence of the SGI can be found in this spirit of history. I wish to proclaim this for the sake of future generations.

20

--September 20-- Lies, no matter how small, that malign and discredit the just must not go unchallenged. It is crucial that we thoroughly expose all malicious false propaganda and defamatory statements for what they are, by speaking out vigorously in the spirit of "refuting the erroneous and revealing the true." Especially when youth rise to this challenge, the integrity and goodness of society as a whole will be protected.

19

--September 19-- In the course of our efforts to widely spread the correct teaching of Buddhism, it is only to be expected that the three obstacles and four devils will make their appearance. That is the time when youth should loudly proclaim the justice of our cause, when they should let forth a mighty lion’s roar. “Advancing bravely and vigorously” should be the perennial spirit of the SGI Youth Division.

18

--September 18-- President Toda declared: “It is not good to lead a life bound by the chains of suffering. Daimoku and the practice to propagate the Law constitute the sharp sword that can cut through those chains. The mission and spirit of the organization is to enable all our fellow citizens to attain a state of life unfettered by the chains of suffering.”

17

--September 17-- As Buddhist leaders, it is vital that we reach out and meet with others. In particular, I hope you will actively make a point of meeting with new members. I say this because Buddhism comes alive in just such human encounters. In his writings, Nichiren Daishonin emphasizes again and again the importance of meeting directly with others.

16

--September 16-- Life is a drama. Those who overcome life’s many ups and downs to emerge triumphant in the end are genuine victors. I hope you will cheerfully live out your lives of profound mission, devoting yourselves to the unsurpassed teaching of the Mystic Law, while transforming sufferings into joy and all adversities into nourishment for further growth.

15

--September 15-- The more we are oppressed, the more we must rise to the challenge and summon many times our ordinary strength. We must forge ourselves to become ever stronger and ever wiser. We must develop real capability so that we can confidently and fearlessly face anyone and anything.

14

--September 14-- Because we champion justice and the cause of good, we incur envy and persecution from others. But if we remain true to our convictions and continue to demonstrate our sincerity and integrity, we will definitely triumph in the end. It is important never to be defeated by any of the trials that may beset us. Such trials represent a golden opportunity for us to do our human revolution.

13

--September 13-- It is vital that leaders in the realm of faith, no matter what the circumstances, stand up with the strong determination to work for the happiness of their fellow members and citizens in their local communities, countries and the entire world. Kosen-rufu is the great path to peace.

12

--September 12-- Nichiren Daishonin teaches us that faith means establishing an indomitable self that is not swayed or shaken by any social crisis or external misfortune that may beset us. Buddha described in the Lotus Sutra by the phrase, “This, my land, remains safe and tranquil.”

11

--September 11-- The first freedom that humanity must aim for in the 21st century is “freedom from violence.” Violence is not acceptable in any form – whether war or terrorism or violence in society or the home. All our thoughts and actions must demonstrate a respect for the sanctity of life. Nor can we permit violent speech or a “terrorism of words” that violates human rights.

10

--September 10-- All life possesses the Ten worlds. Our lives, therefore are endowed with the world of Buddhahood is not something that we create; it is something that we manifest from within us. And the Gohonzon is the means by which we are able to do this. In addition, the lives of those who embrace the Mystic Law and dedicate themselves to kosen-rufu represent good – ultimate good.

9

--September 9-- Nichiren Daishonin revealed a fundamental solution to the ultimate problem of human existence. He taught that through chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon, we could break through any karma and build a state of indestructible happiness within our own lives. The Daishonin states: “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, which I, Nichiren, now chant will enable all people throughout the ten thousand years and more of the Latter Day of the Law to attain Buddhahood.” (Gosho Zenshu, p720)

8

--September 8-- It is human beings who cause the horror of war; it is the insidious, destructive tendency inherent in human life. Therefore, unless there is a fundamental transformation within the lives of human beings themselves, we will never rid ourselves of war. To achieve that, we must foster global citizens, We must extend the network of global citizens who possess both a positive philosophy and true capability and who are dedicated to joining hands with all people on this planet and advancing with them.

7

--September 7-- Unless we eradicate the impurities and negative, destructive tendencies that exist within us, we cannot obtain true happiness. That is why we must strive against that which is evil and destructive.

6

--September 6-- Nichiren Daishonin says with regard to benefit (Jp.kudoku): "The ku[ of kudoku(benefit)] means to extinguish evil and doku means to bring forth good." (Gosho Zenshu, p762) One aspect of benefit, therefore, lies in eliminating evil. There is no more fundamental benefit than eradicating the impurities in our lives and gaining a pure and unsullied state of being.

5

--September 5-- Respecting others is an indication of one's depth as a person, the strength and profundity of one's character. If you are demanding of yourself, you can be kind to others. The person who works hardest is the most accepting of others. In contrast, those who are slipshod and undisciplined themselves are usually hard on others. Those who have never worked hard themselves tend to demand that others do so.

4

--September 4-- There is a saying: "The fish rots from the head." The higher your leadership positions, the more you must unite and work together. Those who have undergone suffering themselves can understand and empathize with the suffering of others. Those who have worked hard themselves can appreciate the value of others' hard work and effort.

3

--September 3-- The journey of kosen-rufu is long, extending into the distant future. There is no need to rush or be impatient. The important thing now is to foster talented individuals one at a time and build a firm and unshakable foundation.

2

--September 2-- The key in our endeavour for worldwide kosen-rufu is dialogue. Nichiren Daishonin urges us to speak with others to the best of our ability about Buddhism, even if we share only a single sentence or phrase. The more we engage others in dialogue, the more we can change the world. The more action we take, the more new frontiers, new possibilities will unfold.

1

--September 1-- A person's true worth is measured by the extent to which they live in the present while giving thought to the distant future, a hundred years, a thousand years hence. Please be assured that all of your commendable daily efforts will give rise to eternal good fortune and benefit, protecting your families, bringing prosperity to your communities and becoming the source for peace around the world.

31

--August 31-- Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, wrote: "The whole art of government consists in the art of being honest." Honesty is crucial; the honest person triumphs in life. The higher one's position, the more important honesty is. This is the mark of a truly humanistic organization.

30

--August 30-- As long as he lived, Founding President Tsunesaburo Makiguchi continued to increase his circle of comrades in faith and to develop his state of life limitlessly by taking action for kosen-rufu, chanting daimoku, and writing and speaking to spread the Law. This ceaseless dedication is the way of life of Buddhism; it is the way of life of Soka

29

--August 29-- We have truly entered the age in which the great life philosophy of Buddhism will lead the world. Many thoughtful, discerning leaders around the globe are focusing intently on the wisdom of Buddhism and enthusiastically endorse the humanistic principles upheld by the SGI. Let us proudly work to expand our network dedicated to bringing peace to the world through the propagation of the correct teaching of Buddhism.

28

--August 28-- I hope you will never become the kind of cowardly individuals who gaze on indifferently while wrongdoing is perpetrated, taking the attitude that it does not concern you and that getting involved will only be to your detriment - the kind of self-serving individuals look good and maneuver to protect themselves from becoming the target of attack. Indifference to injustice is our enemy. Those who pretend not to see evil are accomplices to evil.

27

--August 27-- In many cases, other family members are not practising Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. There is no need to worry or grow anxious about this. This is because if we ourselves stand up confidently in faith, we can lead all of our family and relatives in the direction of happiness and hope. We are like a solitary lighthouse on a dark night, enabling numerous ships to safely sail the seas.

26

--August 26-- An organization is like a person's frame. Having a strong frame is important for healthy growth and development. In the same way, when the organization is united and solid, its members are protected and kosen-rufu can advance.

25

--August 25-- Society is moving forward day by day, and it is a constant challenge to keep up with the pace of change. Apathy is the path to defeat. The bureaucratic mentality that tends to take root in organizations is the source of all evils.

24

--August 24-- The chinese character "Men" of Men Division (MD) literally means "men in the prime of life". It is important therefore that the MD members, while on the one hand being self-possessed and level-headed, continue on the other to demonstrate courage, energy, and action as people who burn with passionate commitment to kosen-rufu. If the MD develop remarkably and establish a solid framework for kosen-rufu, our organization will remain secure forever.

23

--August 23-- Youth Division in particular must not behave arrogantly. I ask the youth leaders to sincerely look after their juniors in faith, and work wholeheartedly for the happiness of their fellow members.

22

--August 22-- Meeting others face-to-face is the only way. Meeting in person forges bonds of trust and brings people together. It also plays a vital role in fostering capable people. Our organization has achieved the global development that it has today precisely because we have persistently carried out such one-to-one dialogue. This is the unwavering formula by which the development of our movement unfolds.

21

--August 21-- The Gohonzon is neither outside of us, nor in some specific place. It is found within faith. Without faith, we cannot bring forth the life state of Buddhahood. The Gohonzon exists in the lives of all who believe in the Mystic Law, chant daimoku, and work for kosen-rufu; it encompasses all of the treasure of the universe.

20

--August 20-- Ultimately, it all comes down to you confidently sharing your conviction and experience in faith with your friends. This plants the seeds of happiness and hope in the lives of those you talk with. These seeds will definitely take root, bud, and eventually flower. Until that happens, it is enough that you continue chanting and wait for that time to come.

19

--August 19-- There are people who live in lavish mansions, but are not happy in the least. There are those who are fabulously rich, yet miserable. Wealth does not equal happiness. Rather, for many people it can actually be a source of suffering. Similarly, just because you gain social position or graduate from a prestigious university does not necessarily mean you will be happy.

18

--August 18-- The human heart is unfathomable. It is fickle and constantly changing. From moment to moment, our inner state of mind changes; we experience various emotions – joy, sorrow, anger, pain. Life, too, is full of changes. That is why, for countless centuries and millennia, humanity has pondered the fundamental question of what constitutes the best and surest way to lasting happiness.

17

--August 17-- We possess the eternal prime point of faith. Those who persist in faith throughout their lives will never be deadlocked at the most fundamental level. For there are no deadlocks in the Mystic Law and faith is the source of infinite hope. It is the vacillating, doubting human heart that creates deadlocks.

16

--August 16-- Nichiren Daishonin writes: “Though we may experience suffering for a time, in the end we will savour joy.” (Gosho Zenshu, p 1656) No matter what suffering and pain you may encounter in life’s journey, you can ultimately transform it all into joy. This is the quintessence of faith.

15

--August 15-- In the realm of Buddhism we are all equal and we are all worthy of respect. We all have a mission and we are all equally direct disciples of Nichiren Daishonin. Everyone, therefore, has the right to voice their opinions. It is also important that we listen to everyone’s opinions as well. It is crucial, too, to create an atmosphere within our organization where people can discuss things freely.

14

--August 14-- The purpose of faith is for each of us to attain happiness. The purpose of Buddhism is for each of us to be victorious. Please be deeply compassionate leaders who protect your fellow members without begrudging your lives.

13

--August 13-- Buddhism teaches that principle of three thousand realms in a single moment of life. Through intense prayer we can significantly transform our destiny, as well as the destiny of our families and society. It is vital to pray with resolute conviction. Prayer stimulates wisdom and fills us with life force.

12

--August 12-- The most sublime, eternal human drama is found in the dynamic transmission of correct faith, philosophy and belief from parent to child, from senior to junior, from mentor to disciple.

11

--August 11-- Nichiren Daishonin says, “The protection of the gods depends on the strength of one’s faith.” (WND, p 953) If we let down our guard, then even the Buddhists gods will desert us. Carelessness is a great enemy. We must avoid carelessness at any cost.

10

--August 10-- I dedicate these words of second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda to you, our Youth Division members: “I want you to be fine young people who cherish the ideal of benefiting the nation, while at the same time making efforts in your immediate environment to solidify your own foundations.”

9

--August 9-- The ultimate human solidarity can be forged only by the supreme unity of comrades who dedicate their lives to the great wish for kosen-rufu. Where there is such unity, members receive benefit that increases boundlessly. Though unseen, the Buddhas and the bodhisattvas definitely observe all of our sincere efforts.

8

--August 8-- Life is a battle. Unless one has an unbreakable steel-like spirit, one cannot accomplish momentous undertaking. When we look at historical figures, and in modern society as well, it is only those who have forged a spirit as strong as steel that are victorious or successful. There is no one who has achieved success by taking it easy. There is no ultimate victory to be found in such an approach.

7

--August 7-- It is remarkable how even in the most difficult circumstances the determination of a leader can draw forth irrepressible joy and courage and can inspire profound confidence in everyone. You are all leaders of faith. Therefore, no matter what might happen, please continue resolutely leading the way to victory, encouraging everyone and helping them advance with hope and in high spirit.

6

--August 6-- Kosen-rufu is the loftiest form of human diplomacy. It is a struggle of communicating turbulent times. We must not be careless or negligent. As the saying goes, “You must keep up your guard, even after a victory.” To engage in a struggle is to exert oneself to the fullest extent. As long as our hearts continue to burn with this spirit, the SGI will develop doundlessly.

5

--August 5-- Nothing is wasted in working for kosen-rufu. Absolutely nothing ever goes to waste on our efforts to introduce Buddhism to others. I am sure that, at times, many of you are concerned and anxious that your efforts to share Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings with others are not proceeding as you might hope. But these are all noble struggles that arise out of your desire to lead others to happiness.

4

--August 4-- Freedom is not some abstract notion, separate from our lives. It is not something given to us by others. Nor is it something that belongs only to certain people and not to others. Freedom is something that ordinary people living in society must, by becoming wise and strong, win for themselves, day after day. From a certain perspective, our SGI activities can be described as a spiritual struggle to win the freedom required to live decent human lives.

3

--August 3-- We who possess a supreme commitment to spreading the Mystic Law are unequalled in strength. With this firm conviction, please lead as many people as possible to the great, eternal path of absolute happiness. And please boldly raise the banners of victory – signifying your wonderful triumph in life and struggle for kosen-rufu – in the place of your mission.

2

--August 2-- We ourselves are the treasure towers of the Mystic Law. The place we are now, wherever it may be, is the Land of Eternally Tranquil Light that has existed for all time. Therefore, we have nothing to fear. We will never be deadlocked. We will never become unhappy.

1

--August 1-- Naturally, leaders and their families will have their share of problems, just like other families. There may be illness to deal with or a host of other areas that need attention. You should not feel the slightest bit ashamed of this. We live in human society and we are an organization of human beings. As Nichiren Daishonin says: “It is the heart that is important.” Appearances are inconsequential. Though various things may happen in our lives, ultimately what matters is our heart. What matters is our attitude in faith.

31

--July 31-- The benefits that are obtained through struggling for kosen-rufu are enormous. Worldly happiness is fleeting. However, the good fortune one acquires by taking action for the sake of Buddhism is eternal. I hope you will all advance with deep pride and confidence.

30

--July 30-- How important it is to help our children inherit faith! When children embrace faith we can be assured of having prayers offered for us after we have died. Moreover. When parents and children practise correct faith together, they can be born together in lifetime after lifetime, and together enjoy an unsurpassed state of being. This is what Nichiren Daishonin teaches.

29

--July 29-- The daimoku chanted by those who exert themselves bravely and vigorously for the cause of kosen-rufu – even if only just one daimoku – has more benefit and power than 1,000 or 10,000 daimoku chanted without any goal or accompanying action. Having faith that is dedicated to kosen-rufu is what counts.

28

--July 28-- The essence of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is to chant daimoku encompassing practice both for oneself and others, and lead all humanity to peace and happiness in the Latter Day of the Law and for all eternity. This means chanting with the spirit to help people become happy and advancing with faith that is directed towards realizing kosen-rufu in actual society.

27

--July 27-- What is vital above all is passion, perseverance, earnest prayer, and the spirit of unity to work together with a diverse group of people based on a shared sense of purpose.

26

--July 26-- We live in an evil world defiled by the five impurities. While reminding one another to be careful and while watching out for each other, let us continue advancing based on the principle that faith means not causing accidents and that suffering no accidents is itself victory.

25

--July 25-- Please read the Gosho each day, even if only a single paragraph or sentence. Mr Josei Toda used to say, “When yo are tired, that is when you should study the Gosho.” The Gosho blazes with the brilliant life of Nichiren Daishonin. When we expose ourselves to the Gosho, our life changes and wisdom, courage and confidence well forth.

24

--July 24-- What is the key to realizing victory in an age of great upheaval and tumultuous change? It is for leader to move, to stand in the forefront and to take initiative. I hope that you will make steady efforts to meet with many people and create allies. Keeping yourselves informed, please take full responsibility and always be the first to act.

23

--July 23-- The SGI exisits to widely propagate the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin. In the course of this struggle, there will naturally be times when we faced with extreme hardship and difficulty. The Daishonin was fiercely attacked by people throughout Japan. Nevertheless, he dauntlessly took action to open a great and eternal path of hope for all humankind. We are carrying on the Daishonin's great legacy.

22

--July 22-- Human society is a struggle between good and evil. That is why it is so important for good people to unite and form alliances and networks to counter and combat those negative forces. Let me share these words of President Makiguchi with you: “If good people allow evil people to do as they please, though they may regard themselves high above such people, they have in effect already capitulated to evil.”

21

--July 21-- The 21st century will be a century of the universe and a century of life. It will also be a century of philosophy, in which the philosophy one upholds and practises will be brought sharply into focus. I hope that you, who embrace a great philosophy that encompasses all of life and the universe, will never forget to be confident and proud that you are advancing at the forefront of this new century.

20

--July 20-- The trust, respect and appreciation that bind fellow members together serve to amplify the spiritual strength of each individual. Unity is strength. In our movement for kosen-rufu, advancing in the unity of "many in body, one in mind" is key.

19

--July 19-- Happiness is determined by our state of life and by the depth of the philosophy we live by. To be happy requires strength; weakness leads to unhappiness. I especially hope that the members of the Young Women Division will become women of indomitable spirit and inner strength.

18

--July 18-- How can we bring forth actual proof? That is our challenge. Faith in the Mystic Law absolutely assures us of victory and prosperity in this life and throughout all eternity.

17

--July 17-- It is the spirit of Youth Division members to protect their mentor and to stand up to take full responsibility for kosen-rufu. Mr Toda was a towering leader of kosen-rufu. My mind was solely filled with thoughts of how to protect him, how to go about realizing his vision, and how to go about realizing his vision, and how to communicate his greatness to people around the world.

16

--July 16-- When we ask ourselves what are the most crucial issues facing humankind in the 21st century, it is clear that a central challenge will be to establish on a global scale of robust philospohy of reverencefor life, a philospohy that is consistently and clearly focused on the human being. This is the only certain means of breaking free of the chained spirals of killing, slaughter and hatred that bind us. Only in this way can we create a world lit by the inherent diginity of all people, a world in which all people may equally savour the fruits of happiness and peace.

15

--July 15-- Youth who lose their courage can no longer be called youth. Youth are the ultimate champions of courage and peace. To be young in itself is to be a noble champion who possesses boundless treasure and hope. I would like all of you to speak out with such conviction and power that others will be moved and inspired.

14

--July 14-- In any field of human endeavour, human beings cannot develop or improve without soume kind of training. This applies all the more so to our Buddhist practice, which constitutes training for becoming a Buddha. We can regard even the most rigorous training with pleasure if we know that it is for attaining an indestructible, diamond-like state of life. All of our prayers and actions for kosen-rufu become the nourishment for our happiness across the three existences as well as the foundation for our eternal glory.

13

--July 13-- I would ask you, as outstanding flag-bearers of dialogue and communication for kosen-rufu, to do all you can to create and expand circles of friendship by sincerely reaching out and talking with others. What tremendous progress we can achieve with just our voice or a single word!

12

--July 12-- Tenacity and effort are what ensure victory - a formula for success that applies as equally to the individual as it does to organizations. Without these two qualities, every struggle is doomed to fail.

11

--July 11-- President Toda once said:" When we are joined by many young people who have faith in and practise the great Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin, we will definitely be able to accomplish kosen-rufu." If young people gather together, we can definitely achieve kosen-rufu - the Youth Division must never forget these words of Mr Toda.

10

--July 10-- Those whose lives are founded on an unshakable philosophy will never be misled by the absurdity perpetrated by the powerful or swayed by superficial trends. We must therefore live out our lives with wisdom and strength, forever in accord with the laws of the universe.

9

--July 9-- In life, struggles and challenges lead to growth; they add zest to life. When we stop challenging ourselves, we stop growing. Stagnation sets in. Life feels empty and meaningless. Those who engage in activities for kosen-rufu are positive and filled with life.

8

--July 8-- The real world is harsh. The number of envious, prejudiced, cold-hearted and selfish people will no doubt increase. In society you may encounter people you do not like and you may well have to work under bosses you find it hard to get along with, That is why the three qualities of integrity, perseverance and hope are so important. No one is a match for the person who possesses these qualities.

7

--July 7-- A philosopher once said that a person who would conquer the world must first conquer his own personal sorrows. I am fond of saying. It is very important for you to establish a solid understanding of the world and of history. Without this, you cannot succeed on the world stage.

6

--July 6-- What is the purpose of life? What is the purpose of learning? Without a profound philosophy that addresses these questions, our lives will be superficial and shallow. How can we deepen ourselves as individuals? How can we attain a rich, fulfilling views of what it means to be a human being? And how can we lead lives that make the most of our potential? These are the basic questions we face in life.

5

--July 5-- Forge a solid self and develop within you the power to attract happiness to your life. Then you yourself will be happy and fulfilled, and you will be able to lead your family, your relatives and your friends to happiness, too.

4

--July 4-- No one becomes great without a stuggle. All of life is a struggle. Only those who have faced and triumphed over adversity possess genuine greatness; without this struggle, no matter how famous or celebrated one may be, any claim to greatness is merely an empty facade.

3

--July 3-- When we steadfastly dedicate ourselves to the path of mentor and disciple, we can boundlessly manifest the wisdom and power that is inherent in our life. In this world, nothing is stronger than the united struggle of mentor and disciple. Nothing is more joyful.

2

--July 2-- Nichiren Daishonin writes:"Anyone who teaches others even a single phrase of the Lotus Sutra is the envoy of the Thus Come One."(WND, p33) The Thus Come One refers to the Buddha. Those who talk to another person about the greatness of faith, even if just a few words, are messengers of the Buddha. Through the very act of talking to someone about Buddhism, whether or not that person takes faith, we accumulate boundless benefit and good fortunes as the Buddha's envoys.

1

--July 1-- Now is the time for youth to stand up. It is the Century of Soka Youth. If you are going to try to achieve something, then strive to be the best. Please create a great record of accomplishment that will win the applause and praise of others. Be a presence that inspires reassurance, confidence, a person whose dedicated efforts deeply moved others.

30

--June 30-- I hope you will become the nucleus of effort to form a truly global family of humanity and further, a global family of humanity that is dedicated to world peace. Please possess this spirit. The important thing is your determination to do so, here and now, just as you are.

29

--June 29-- Academic achievement and intellectual ability have nothing to do with attaining Buddhahood. The spirit of faith is what counts. Nichiren Daishonin clearly states:"It is the heart that is important."

28

--June 28-- The most precious treasure parents can pass on to their children is faith. No matter how splendidly they hope to raise their children, they are overlooking the most essential thing if they neglect to teach them abouth faith and are caught up in appearances and other superficial matters. Their children will not be able to accumulate good fortune and will encounter defeat in life.

27

--June 27-- Speak out! The way to victory lies in persistent and thorough dialogue. And let us resolutely build a great force of Bodhisattvas of the Earth who will form the foundation for lasting peace for all humankind!

26

--June 26-- The ultimate essence of faith in the Mystic Law is that the life of Nichiren Daishonin manifests itself in our lives. We can strive with the same strength as Nichiren Daishonin. When we do, we will never be defeated, no matter what hardships we encounter. We will not be unhappy. We will not fail to win. We will not fail to become happy. This is the quintessence of faith. I hope you will be completely convinced of this and live your lives filled with optimism and hope.

25

--June 25--
When we face hardships or challenging times, it is particularly important that we remain in close contact with sincere, warmhearted members and advance together with harmonious organization for kosen-rufu. By doing so, we deny devilish functions any chance to enter our lives. The SGI is truly a "safe haven" of life. And there is no greater joy than a life dedicated to faith.

24

--June 24-- By working for kosen-rufu, we become healthy; we become filled with vitality and life force. The great path of eternal hope and victory lies in a life dedicated to kosen-rufu.

23

--June 23--
Not advancing is regressing. Let us advance and strive day after day, so that we have no regrets. Let us make each day one of brave and vigorous advance, of dynamic progress. Let us accomplish a towering victory for kosen-rufu in the 21st century, causing our movement to shine even more brilliantly with new light and new capable people.

22

--June 22-- Our voice praying earnestly for the sake of kosen-rufu - that in itself is the voice of the bodhisattva and the voice of the Buddha. It is indeed a case of "our voice doing the Buddha's work".

21

--June 21-- The Art of War by Sun-tzu, the ancient text contains this maxim: "A victorious army first wins and then seeks battle; a defeated army first battles and then seek victory." In other words, the victors have won through preparation and strategy before the actual battle begins.

20

--June 20-- In the realm of Buddhism, incurring slander and abuse as a result of our efforts to spread the Law it the highest honour; it is also actual proof that we will attain Buddhahood. Nichiren Daishonin teaches that we must never fear such persecution.

19

--June 19-- Learning is the individual's inalienable right. As human beings, it is not only our right but also our duty. Please never lose the desire to continue learning throughout your lives.

18

--June 18--
Life is making pratical effots. It is challenging ourselves. It is advancing. Your youth never comes again. Please leave behind some achievement, please create something, as a record of your existence in this world

17

--June 17--
Humility means doing your best in your present circumstances and situation, working together harmoniously with those around you. Arrogance, on the other hand, is doing whatever you please, without thinking about anyone else. Arrogrance is wrong and will bring one misfortune.

16

--June 16-- Please do not spend your youth avoiding hardship and taking the path of least resistance. Please seek out difficult challenges and work hard. And if you are going to take on hardships, let it be for the sake of high ideal. Do not stay closed up in your own tiny shell, pursue your studies with the high ideals of helping your friends and contributing to society and humanity. This is where the true significance of the pursuit of learning lies

15

--June 15-- Where can we find the key for turning our lives in a positive direction? Absolutely vital in this question is the philosophy of human revolution. Human revolution offers the only certain path to happiness and victory in life. Human revolution means transforming our lives from unhappiness to happiness.

14

--June 14-- Disciples who have made their inner resolve one and the same with that of their mentor are strong; they are never defeated. This was the case with President Toda towards his mentor President Makiguchi, and with me towards my mentor President Toda. This is the spirit of the Soka Gakkai's three founding presidents. This formula of mentor and disciple is unchanging

13

--June 13-- Climbing over mountains and making our way through valleys is what makes hiking interesting. The walking may be challenging, but it allows us to experience wonderful vistas and arrive, in the end, at our destination. Simply flying to the spot in a plane would be boring. The same is true of life.

12

--June 12-- Nichiren Daishonin replied to Shijo Kingo: "To accept is easy; to continue is difficult. But Buddhahood lies in continuing faith. Those who uphold this sutra should be prepared to meet difficulties." (WND, p 471) It is through confronting difficulties that we attain Buddhahood and achieve a state of life of peace and tranquility. The mountains and valleys and storms along the way are something we should be prepared for and ready to overcome.

11

--June 11-- Encouraging one person can lead to the encouragement of countless others. Nichiren Daishonin knew that one person could open the way for kosen-rufu. We need to learn from the Daishonin's example.

10

--June 10-- Our families are an important foundation of our daily lives. When we ensure that our families are solid and secure, everyone in the family can exert themselves wholeheartedly for kosen-rufu. And it is women who take on a large part of this important responsibility. In families, where the women are firmly frounded, the men will be likewise. On the other hand, when the men are firmly grounded but the women are not, then, more often than not, both of them will suffer. The power of women is immense.

9

--June 9-- Our earnest prayers and grassroots activities - starting from the local community and rippling out to the entire world, starting from the individual and rippling out to all humanity - create the momentum for the achievement of peace and kosen-rufu.

8

--June 8-- We only live this precious life but once. Please make continual efforts, steadily overcoming life's challenges one step at a time, until you ultimately achieve a life in which all of your wishes are realized. May all of you, without exception, become happy. That is my sincerest wish.

7

--June 7-- One of Nichiren Daishonin's writings that we have read countless times states :"You must not spend your lives in vain and regret it for ten thousand years to come." (WND,p 622) Where can we find a life that is not spent in vain? It is found, I assert, in a life dedicated to fulfilling the vow of mentor and disciple to realize kosen-rufu, which leads directly to world peace.

6

--June 6--
A revolution in education begins with a revolution in educators themselves. In order to build a better world, it is important for us to realize that unless teachers improve, there will be no improvement in students, and if students do not improve, there will be a dearth of capable leaders in the future. That is why we need to see a dramatic change in the attitude and quality of educators.

5

--June 5--
To rise from the depths of sorrow of a beloved person's death and set out to realize their vision with even greater determination and resolve - nothing can compare to the profundity, nobility, and strength of such a life. This is something that my mentor in life Josei Toda often solemnly asserted.

4

--June 4-- Buddhism is about emerging triumphant. Victory, in whatever challenge or struggle, invariably bring joy. To be defeated, on the other hand, makes everyone downcast. Losers weep bitterly; victors shine with glory. That is why we must win in life without fail. That is the purpose of our faith and our solid unity.

3

--June 3-- This existence passes by in an instant, but our lives themselves are eternal. Please be deeply confident that all your present efforts and hard work will contribute to your eternal happiness. That is why it is important never to retreat in faith, no matter how daunting the difficulties you may encounter. Do not be afraid. If you retreat or let yourself be ruled by fear, you will be the one to lose. "For your own sake and for the future, do not backslide in faith! Do not be afraid! Persevere in faith!" - this is Nichiren Daishonin's message.

2

--June 2--
There are many trials and challenges that await us in our efforts to advance kosen-fufu. The three powerful enemies will repeatedly assail us, and many are the obstacles we must surmount. All of our hard work for kosen-rufu, however, is transformed into our boundless good fortune and benefit. In other words, every effort we make also benefits our own lives. Moreover, those with whom we forge bonds of friendship and help form a connection with Buddhism in this lifetime will share profound ties with us across eternity.

1

--June 1--
If a person is defeated in the end, then no matter how successful they may have appeared along the way, their life will ultimately have been a failure. Victory in Buddhism eaquals eternal happiness. This is a crucial point. The victory we achieve through faith is valid not just for this existence, but it endures forever throughout past, present, and future

31

--May 31--
Heart-to-heart bonds between people are the very essence of our Buddhist organization, our organization for kosen-rufu. If these are lost, the SGI will be reduced to a cold and heartless bureaucracy; it will no longer be a realm of Buddhism

30

--May 30--
The challenge is transforming our lives so that we are no longer swept along by force of habit or at the mercy of the whims of destiny. The incredible power to do that already exists inside you.

29

--May 29-- Knowledge alone cannot guarantee happiness. We need to have wisdom if we are to live wisely. Knowledge is like a pump that draws up the water of wisdom. Cultivating wisdom is a shortcut to happiness.

28

--May 28--
Out in society, there are many different kinds of people; malicious people who seek to undermine and deceive others; arrogant people who scorn and despise others. We study so that we can prevail over such people, succeed in all our endeavours and leading fulfilling lives.

27

--May 27--
It is scaling life's mountains, crossing life's valleys, and traversing life's precipitous peaks, ever advancing with integrity and fortitude, that happiness is found. A magnificent palace can only be built when we work unceasingly on its construction day after day with all our might, until it is finally completed. Ths same is true of life.

26

--May 26--
All of us undergo various sufferings in life. No human being is without worries and problems. That is why Buddhism, which teaches that earthly desires are enlightenment, is necessary in our lives. We need to transform our karma. That is what Buddhism is for. Be brave! That is Nichiren Daishonin's cry to us all.

25

--May 25-- Some of you may have family members or relatives who do not understand your faith, but there is no need to be anxious about this. This is where your human revolution starts. All you have to do is show, by your example, steadily, little by little, how wonderful Buddhism is.

24

--May 24--
We live in the realm of human beings. By the very nature of that realm, there are no obstacles in it that we, as human beings, are unable to overcome. What is more, we uphold the great Mystic Law, and becauswe of that there is no obstacle that we cannot surmount.

23

--May 23--
We need to rise into action right where we are, with the determination to do everything we can. That is crucial. True happiness is to be found in steadily and sincerely seeking true humanity and self- realization in daily life. This is the start of building a great life.

22

--May 22--
Let us always make certain to remember, respect, and protect the people who are striving with diligence and perseverance, modestly and inconspicuously, in their communities. My deepest wish is to visit these people, bow in respect to them, and sincerely thank them for their admirable efforts.

21

--May 21--
Our community is important. Those who work hard in their communities, no matter how tough the challenge, are champions. We can become Buddhas right where we are now. It is a big mistake to think of the large cities as somehow superior to the countryside. I firmly believe that those who triumph in their own community are the true, and most human, victors in life.

20

--May 20-- Embodying the spirit of Nichiren Daishonin's writings, we of the SGI have called on thinking people throughout the world to unite and have opened an incomparable path of peace, culture, and education. We have brought people together. We have brought the world together. And we have brought diverse cultures together.

19

--May 19--
The SGI is an organization of truth and sincerity. As such, our efforts are guaranteed to bear fruit, without fail. On the other hand, petty, unscrupulous people who try to engineer the downfall of those working for truth and justice are bound to suffer ruin in the end. The Chinese philosopher Hsun-tzu said:"One who scorns the just and vilifies the sincere may wish to escape ruin, but most certanily cannot,"These are the insightful words of one of the world's great thinker

18

--May 18-- Kosen-rufu is the infinitely noble and worthy challenge of attempting to elevate the human spirit to the loftiest heights. No life could be greater than one dedicated to this glorious and everlasting cause. Of course, we all experience various problems and difficulties in our daily existence, but the important thing is to achieve exhilarating victory in each challenge before us, one at a time, day by day.

17

--May 17--
You cannot build a foundation without effort and hard work, and without a solid foundation, you cannot become a person of genuine substance. Please make no mistake about this. Cunning people who shun hard work and seek to make it big overnight invariably come to a fall in the end.

16

--May 16--
Those who do not stand up against wrongdoing and injustice are not just. They are not strong; they are devious and self-serving. President Toda often said quite strictly:"People who are lax towards evil, people who do not fight against evil, no matter how good-natured they are or impressive they may appear on the surface, ultimately have no principles, no convictions. They have no real character, either. They are devious, self-serving individuals."

15

--May 15--
In my youth, I also worked hard as a district leader and group chief. Those who suddenly shoot to fame or high position tend to crumple and fall just as easily, because they lack a solid basis. A foundation cannot be built without effort and hard work. This only stands to reason.

14

--May 14-- What is the most ordinary, yet also the most powerful driving force for kosen-rufu? It is the district. I hope you will always remember this as you challenge yourselves to advance kosen-rufu.

13

--May 13--
History is uncompromising in its judgement: justice and truth, error and lies are clearly revealed. It is crucial, therefore, that we develop into people of wisdom who can distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong, based on a broad historical perspective.

12

--May 12--
Nichiren Daishonin writes:"Strengthen your faith day by day and month after month. Should you slacken in your resolve even a bit, devils will take advantage."(WND, p997) When we display a slackness or weakness in our resolve, having the attitude of "that's good enough", we will be defeated by devilish functions. Not advancing is retreating. Let us keep moving forward vigorously throughout our lives along the path of kosen-rufu.

11

--May 11-- Unity is important. The SGI has achieved the global development it has today by acting in solid unity of "many in body, one in mind" in exact accord with Nichiren Daishonin's declaration. We must never forget this point. It is precisely for this reason too, that we must never allow ill-intentioned or arrogant individuals to disrupt the pure realm of the SGI. Nothing is stronger than unity in the cause of justice.

10

--May 10--
For What purpose do we practise Nichiren Buddhism? It is to win in life. Victory is happiness; it brings joy, Defeat, on the other hand, is misery. No excuse can take away the wretchedness of defeat. That is why it is important to win in life and never be defeated. That is the purpose of faith.

9

--May 9--
Nichiren Daishonin write:"If the Law that one embraces is supreme, then the person who embraces it must accordingly be foremost among all others."(WND,p61) You who base your lives on the Mystic Law are the foremost people in the world. You possess boundless and immeasurable good fortune and a supremely noble mission.

8

--May 8--
Cowardly people are quick to rely on others, assuming that someone else will take care of things for them. They do not make any efforts themselves. On the contrary, they often engage in wrongdoing when no one is watching and cause trouble for their colleagues. Ultimately they wind up in a situation where they can no longer remain in the same circle, prompting them to betray their friends and leave.

7

--May 7-- Whether or not one has attended this or that school is a trivial matter when viewed from the cosmic scope of Buddhism. Please take pride in the fact that you are studying in the eternal university of life, which teaches the supreme law of cause and effect - the Mystic Law - and the way to lead lives of absolute freedom.

6

--May 6-- The ultimate aim of attending university is also to become happy. Likewise, gaining a good position in society is also merely a means to attain happiness. In contrast, faith constitutes the direct path to happiness. It connects directly to the goal. Guiding people to happiness is the SGI's mission.

5

--May 5--
Social progress, economic progress, and in fact all progress depends upon the progress of human beings themselves, who are the protagonists in these endeavours. At the same time, if the faith or ideology that human beings take as their foundation does not advance, there will be no real human progress.

4

--May 4-- First of all, it is vital that we practise faith as part of the SGI organization, for only in the SGI are people working together towards kosen-rufu in the unity of "many in body, one in mind". Some people may think that practising faith alone, unconnected to the organization, is easier. But when people practise alone, their faith tends to become selfish and their actions, egocentric. This is a frightening thing.

3

--May 3--
May 3 is our initial starting point, and simultaneously, the day we make our final declaration of compete victory. It is the grand anniversary which celebrates our efforts to realize a golden age of supreme spiritual triumph and glory. May 3 is invincible, unshaken by raging tempests, victorious hope. May 3 is the day on which our friends around the world rejoice, celebrate, and deepen their determination to keep striving for kosen-rufu.

2

--May 2--
To teach others about Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism requires courage. While compassion is also important, as common morals it can sometimes be hard for us to summon compassion. That is why courage is vital. Courage translates into compassion. Chanting daimoku is how we summon courage. The power of faith and the power of Buddhism is the source from which we can draw forth courage.

1

--May 1--
It is none other than the SGI that is resoultely carrying out Nichiren Daishonin's vow for the widespread propagation of the Mystic Law. If the SGI had not appeared, the sutra passages that predict the Law's widespread propagation in the Latter Day would be rendered false. So would the Gosho. They would all be false. The Gosho clearly illuminates just how immensely noble and important all of you are.

--April 30-- Propagation is the foundation practice in Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. It is also the essence of the Lotus Sutra. This is corroborated by the Great Teacher T’ien-t’ai of China, who declared: “The Lotus Sutra is the teaching of shakubuku, the refutation of the provisional doctrines.” To boldly speak the truth with compassion for the other person and clarify the correctness or error of the tenets they uphold – this constitutes the practice of propagating the Mystic Law.l Our strength lies in the fact that we champion truth.

29

--April 29-- Gaining education qualifications, titles, or position in society are but a means for attaining happiness; they do not constitute happiness in and of themselves. The most important thing is faith.

28

--April 28-- The important thing is how deeply we can be aware of our personal mission. This is the standard that determines the depth and greatness of our lives. Being aware of our mission gives birth to strength and hope and becomes the driving force that enables us to move forward through life’s difficulties. Everyone has a mission in life. Not a single human being is without one. What determines the course of your life is whether you awaken to that mission or not.

27

--April 27-- As practitioners of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, we have faith and we have ideals. We are leading truly happy and fulfilling lives. Now is the perfect opportunity for us to widely spread the philosophy and ideals of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism. Let’s rise to this challenge!

26

--April 26-- Buddhism is reason. And faith is manifested in daily life. Getting enough sleep so that we can wake up refreshed and ready for the new day’s challenges is very important for good health. We practice Buddhism so that we can enjoy good health and happiness.

25

--April 25-- As we strive to realize the widespread propagation of the Mystic Law, the three powerful enemies and the three obstacles and four devils will invariable arise, vying with one another to hinder our progress. Battling these negative forces constitutes the great path to attaining Buddhahood. Through exerting ourselves bravely to surmount various obstacles, we can forge outstanding character. Without such challenges, we would only be armchair Buddhists; our faith would be nothing but an empty formality.

24

--April 24-- Each morning and evening, I am earnestly chanting daimoku for our members in Japan and around the world, with the prayer that they will not be defeated, that they will absolutely triumph. I would like every single member without exception to be a great victor. This is my true and honest wish.

23

--April 23-- Lie if a struggle. Since that is true, let s make it a victorious one! Everything starts from here. This is the spirit of those who from the time of their youth have upheld philosophy and a bright, determined sense of mission. It is the spirit of those who embark on a profound, humanistic struggle for the happiness of their fellow human beings.

22

--April 22-- It is important to energetically advance based on the two ways of practice and study – that is, striving in our Buddhist practice and studying the teachings of Buddhism. We must not simply go through the motions, carrying out our organizational activities out of force of habit. We must actively practice Nichiren Daishonin’s teachings outselves and teach others about them as well, working to advance kosen-rufu as the Daishonin instructs.

21

--April 21-- Everything in life is part of our training; it is for our own benefit and development. We must resolve to accumulate, right now, in the situation we find ourselves at this moment, everlasting good fortune for ourselves at this moment, everlasting good fortune for ourselves as well as for our families and relatives. The human revolution of a single individual can transform everything in a direction leading towards happiness, hope, and peace. Please advance joyfully and in high spirits.

20

--April 20-- In the realm of faith, we are all equal. The strict law of cause and effect is undiscriminating.

19

--April 19-- Advanc preparation is very important. Whether you are heading out for a discussion meeting or to introduce Buddhism to others, or whether you are going to work, it is the person who prepares in advance who succeeds. The most important and fundamental preparation is gongyo and daimoku. Chanting to the Gohonzon with a strong determination to succeed is the best preparation of all.

18

--April 18-- Nichiren Daishonin repeatedly teaches that benefit flows forth when we strive against evil for the sake of kosen-rufu; when we do not, it does not. And he urges us to follow his example. The SGI is an “organization of kosen-rufu” acting in complete accord with the Daishonin’s teachings. It is an organization of supreme human unity.

17

--April 17-- Buddhism teaches the importance of the present and the future. The purpose of Buddhism and faith is for us to always be able to advance from today towards tomorrow filled with hope, taking positive steps for the future. We must never forget this crucial point.

16

--April 16-- The foundation of health is strong faith, which enables us to draw forth strong life force, triumph over harmful, negative forces, and transform our karma. Nichiren Daishonin famously declares: “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is like the roar of a lion. What sickness can therefore be an obstacle?” (WND, p412)

15

--April 15-- Dialogue must be conducted in a spirit of equality, with the parties involved respecting each other as equals. It must be a mutual exchange where the parties speak the truth and actual fact, and not just spout one-sided propaganda. In any event, such truly genuine dialogue is to be found in our efforts to talk to others about Buddhism and share with them our practice.

14

--April 14-- Hope and courage do not lie somewhere far out of reach, nor are they bestowed on us from without. Anyone who aligns themselves with Mystic Law can tap from within their lives an indomitable state if being as vast as the universe and make it shine forth with sunlike brilliance, wherever they may be. Here we find a philosophy if the highest humanism for which the world has been yearning and waiting.

13

--April 13-- The times are changing ever more rapidly with each passing year. Darkness and confusion grow ever deeper. For that very reason, I hop you will all triumph with strong faith and resolute action. In accord with the Buddhist principle of “consistency from beginning to end”, your victory will determine the victory for all future generations. This is the formula for winning in Buddhism. Now is the formula for winning in Buddhism. Now is the time for you to solidly secure the cause for victory in your own lives.

12

--April 12-- We can have all the power, wealth, or fame in the world, but that alone would not assure us of happiness that will endure throughout eternity or allow us to create universal value. It may not even be enough to secure our happiness in this lifetime. Our true worth is determined by the philosophy and principles we cherish and by our views and attitudes towards life, society, and human existence.

11

--April 11-- Cowardance is also the fundamental nature of all those who have betrayed the SGI over the years. There is no more pitiful characteristic for a human being to possess than cowardice.

10

--April 10-- Because people are wise, they are maligned. Because people are just and upright, they are defamed. You may also encounter slander and abuse because of your faith in Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, but never let this surprise or intimidate you.

9

--April 9-- It is important to live with tenacity, right to the very end, to boldly write your own history in your own unique way. There is no need for you to be resentful or jealous of others. We possess the Gohonzon, unsurpassed in all the world. And we are able to freely tap the infinite treasures that exist within our own lives.

8

--April 8-- It is important to live true to yourself. If you become strong, then no matter how trying your present situation may be, you will not be daunted by it. Even if you are struggling financially now, as long as you continue making efforts based on faith, you will eventually find that you have the money you need. Even the most painful and difficult situations will, when viewed from the distance of time, seem like the events of a dream.

7

--April 7-- There is no need to lament when criticized for doing good. This is even more true with regard to our efforts to introduce Buddhism to others, an act of the highest good. Nichiren Daishonin also says that we should rejoice when we encounter obstacles. This is the SGI spirit.

6

--April 6-- If everything is smooth sailing right from the beginning, we cannot become people of substance and character. By surmounting painful setbacks and obstacles, we can create a brilliant history of triumph that will shine forever. That is what makes life so exciting and enjoyable. In any field of endeavor, those who overcome hardships and grow as human beings are advancing towards success and victory in life.

5

--April 5-- It is an illusion to think that we can find happiness by going to some other place, far away from our present reality. Our happiness is determined by or mindset. If we resolve that the place where we are right now is the perfect place for carrying out our Buddhist practice, and if we challenge ourselves there, then that place will become the “Capital of Eternally Tranquil Light”. It will shine as a bright citadel of happiness.

4

--April 4-- We of the SGI who propagate the Mystic Law are the emissaries of the Buddha and the emanations of the Daishonin. Consequently, no matter how tumultuous the times, we who are equals of the Buddha will never be unhappy nor defeated by hardship. That is why I hope, whatever happens, you will always keep pressing forward, ever forward, in high spirits.

3

--April 3-- There may be people who appear to have higher social status or seem to be happier than you, but the person who believes in and propagates the Mystic Law is already the happiest person in the world and a great leader. Why? Because the Mystic Law is the path to absolute happiness. Because the Mystic Law is a teaching that awakens us to the truth that all living beings are Buddhas. Nothing surpasses the Mystic Law – this is the truth conveyed in Nichiren Daishonin’s writings.

2

--April 2-- President Toda once said to me, “Nothing is more frightening than human jealousy. Nothing is more fearful than the evil and destructive forces that reside in the human heart. For that reason, you must become strong. You must live with such conviction that you have no regrets!” I would like to present these words to the members og the Youth Division, whom I cherish deeply. I call on you: “Uphold the banner of truth and justice!” “Always be courageous!”

1

--April 1--
Please treat everyone you have a connection with, including your own parents, with utmost respect. I hope you will work to broaden our network of friendship and trust with open and generous hearts. The more you do so, the greater the benefit you will receive, the further kosen-rufu will advance and the more expansive your own state of life will become.

31

--March 31--
It does not matter if we are not gifted speakers. What matters is making consistent efforts to talk to others in a way that is most natural for each of us. It is vital not to remain silent in the face of injustice or wrongdoing, no matter what the other person’s status or position. If we chant powerful daimoku and take action, results will definitely appear. The causal law of Buddhism is extremely rigorous. The key point is that we ourselves become strong.

30

--March 30--
Nichiren Daishonin sates: “Only by defeating a powerful enemy can one prove one’s real strength.” This is a truth that applies to all spheres of life. Youth must never be cowards nor weak-spirited individuals who are constantly defeated. I would like you to become ever-victorious champions who win one decisive victory after another in all the various “battlefields” of life and society. Winning in life is the purpose of faith; it is also a testimony of the power of faith.

29

--March 29--
In the realm of faith, there must be absolutely no discrimination on the basis of such things as academic background, titles, or social status. The goal of Nichiren Buddhism is achieving kosen-rufu. We should advance in exact accord with the instructions of the Daishonin. It is not people who boast high academic credentials or social position who are worthy of the greatest respect, but people who possess sincere faith.

28

--March 28--
Faith equals daily life. Buddhism is manifested in society. Our day-to-day conduct and out steady daily efforts are important. Just believing that everything will be all right as long as we chant daimoku is not the correct attitude of a genuine Buddhist. Buddhism is the law of cause and effect. The benefit of daimoku really comes to shine when we study hard, make efforts, and do our best in all endeavours. And our earnest daimoku is what fuels those efforts.

27

--March 27--
It is absolutely forbidden for any SGI leaders to borrow money from or lend money to fellow members. Problems arising from such loans can result not only in trouble and grief for the parties involved, but in distrust and confusion spreading throughout the organization. I state once again that what matters most is not money, fame, or position, but one’s heart.

26

--March 26--
As human beings, we are polished and forged in the great sea of humanity. We are able to build a solid self through coming into contact and interacting with all kings of people, young and old alike. It is the same in the realm of faith. We block off the path to our own happiness if we succumb to selfish faith that is disconnected from the SGI. That is what makes a harmoniously united organization of faith so important.

25

--March 25--
The spirit of mutual respect is the essence of Buddhist humanism. It is the profound teaching of Shakyamuni and Nichiren Daishonin. It is the light of hope that can transform the cycle or war and violence. The significance of your efforts to widely communicate the teachings of Buddhism is immense indeed.

24

--March 24-- THE SGI is a realm of faith. The most important thins in that realm are faith and personal character. We are studying, if you like, at the “people’s university” of the SGI/ This “SGI University” is the best university in the world, where we learn how to live as human beings.

23

--March 23-- Religion serves as foundation for people’s lives. When people possess a solid inner foundation of humanistic faith, the economics, philosophy and education can begin to fulfil their highest purposes. That is why a humanistic religious movement will inevitably be a movement dedicated to improving society and realizing peace for all humankind. It is with this conviction that we of the SGI have developed out movement for peace, culture, and education based on Buddhism.

22

--March 22-- “I am happy. For I uphold the unsurpassable Mystic Law” – just talk to others about Buddhism with this conviction. No matter what your present circumstances, everyone who chants and spreads the Mystic Law is an emissary of the Buddha. I hope you will all take great pride in the fact that you are accumulating immeasurable good fortune and walking a direct course to eternal happiness.

21

--March 21-- Society as a whole today seems shrouded in gloom. It is as if we have entered a dark tunnel. That is precisely why it is so important for us to energetically send the philosophy of hope, the voice of encouragement, the power of guidance to all around us. Those who can continue to do this are true leaders, and their lives emanate with the virtues of the Buddha who is dedicated to leading others to happiness.

20

--March 20-- Buddhism concerns itself with winning. And it is crucial that we triumph. We must triumph over ourselves and triumph in life. That is the reason we practice Nichiren Buddhism.
